Colin Channer Gives Dramatic Reading at the JPL

Saturday, April 5, 2025
2:00 p.m.
Library Meeting Hall

Colin Channer, Rhode Island Poet Laureate, will be the Featured Poet at the Jamestown Philomenian Library at 28 North Road on Saturday, April 5 at 2 pm. Channer  is a dramatic story teller whose poetry is intense, accessible, funny, uplifting, and deep.

Channer will engage in dialogue with members of the audience after his dramatic reading. He is funny, engaging, and brilliant. The spontaneous exchanges between him and audience members will be memorable. Poets and authors of other types of writing have an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences.

Channer is “one of the Caribbean Diaspora’s finest writers,” according to Pulitzer Prize winning writer Junot Díaz.

Channer’s dramatic reading will be a celebration of National Poetry Month that takes place each April. Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month celebrates poets’ integral role in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world.

Colin Channer was born in Jamaica and educated there and in New York. His most recent book is Console (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), a New Yorker Best Book of the Year and a Finalist for the New England Book Award in addition to being listed for the PEN/Voelcker.

Colin’s many honors include a Cullman Fellowship from the New York Public Library, a Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award, an Amy Clampitt Residency and a Henry Meritt Wriston Fellowship from Brown University where he is Associate Professor & Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Literary Arts. His poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Conjunctions, Agni and other venues.
